In the past, it is enough that you have an overhead lighting fixture. But in today's world overhead lighting does not cut it anymore.  That's why floor lamps are becoming more and more popular.  If you want to have a floor lamp, you can buy it at numerous online stores out there, or you can make your own.

If you want to make your own, you should look for a plant stand and a table lamp.  One of the requirements for this is that the table lamp and the plant stand should complement each other.  Another is that the base of the table lamp should snugly fit in the circular top of the plant stand.

I would suggest raiding salvage stores or garden stores.  Another thing I recommend is to check if you have a table lamp that you are no longer using or you are about to throw out. If you have one, then don't throw it away and instead look around for a plant stand that you can use as the base of a floor lamp.  This is also true if you have a plant stand that you don't use anymore but you don't want to throw away.

All you have to do is to secure the table lamp on the plant stand, rewire the whole thing if needed, and that's it.
